Moorland Fisheries, in the Burgundy region of France, completed their latest drain down with the target of removing all unwanted small species from the carp lake. The final result is that only carp, catfish, perch and wide-mouth bass have been retained and 7500 lb of unwanted fish removed.
The biomass now runs at 481 lb per acre and with the potential of the lake at 700 lb per acre (over 15 acres) it is, in theory, a 3000 lb weight gain waiting to happen.
Each fish was checked for mouth damage and all removed that were not looking their best, keeping only those in mint condition. At the same time, every fish was weighed in order to have accurate details for future reference and the biggest shock was to find a 46.00 lb unknown mirror and a similarly unknown 42.00 lb common. “Where had those two been hiding?”
The final stock tally for next season was 286 fish, with 101 of them over 30.00 lb. Next spring will produce at least 44 fish over 40.00 lb with carp to mid fifties and catfish to well over 100 lb.
Just the reduction in food competition alone can’t fail to make the fishing in 2008 totally different and extremely exciting.
